The Cost of Great Hair

When times are tight, outgoings are under the microscope - and we are no exception. Sophie Webster opens up the discussion.

Why are hairdressers so expensive?

We have definitely heard this question being asked – whether in the salon or various online conversations.

In difficult times, some things are quick to be cut back on – or cheaper alternatives sought out.

At Simon Webster Hair, we appreciate we are not the cheapest place in town to get your hair cut – but we have always maintained we offer more than just that.

Below are some of the factors we think are worth considering – and we would love to hear your view!

So...what's behind the price?

We put together some of the reasons why we can be more expensive than some other hair salons – showing you our commitment to quality, the community and an ethical, sustainable approach.

Reviews & Replies

We are delighted to have earned many positive reviews on Google and love reading them all – it helps motivate us all here in the salon and to feel great about the service we provide.

We also learn a great deal from critical reviews – including the sometimes-difficult subject of price versus value.

We try not to ignore or shy away from these, and reply to customers who feel that we are expensive. See below for some recent examples:

“Angie listened to my request for warm tone highlights and chose just the right colour. Love it. Professional, lovely and friendly service as usual. I’d give Angie 5 stars but dropped one star due to salon prices which is beyond hair stylists control.”

Our response

“Thanks so much for leaving Angie such a great review – she’s been with us since she was an apprentice and we’re super proud of what a skilled hairdresser she’s become. Great to hear that you loved your colour and hope we see you again really soon.

We’re not the cheapest salon for sure, and would love to be able to charge less. But as a Real Living Wage Employer, we’re committed to rewarding our team for the years they spend training to be the best they can be. And we only use professional, fully-sustainable products that do come with a higher price tag, because we believe in not compromising on quality.

So to try and remain as accessible as we can (especially during this cost of living crisis) we offer a price-inclusive menu at a lower price point with our New Talent stylists and colourists. Lots of regular clients visit our New Talent team for top-up services like re-toning or root applications between their full colour services, to keep their colour looking fab. If you’d like to know more, Angie or our FOH team would be happy to help.”

Jamie Evans (Google Reviews, 2024)

“I love having my hair cut here. Simon and his team are always so attentive and are able to masterfully interpret what I want whether it’s styling or a cut. I have literally travelled from Wales to visit this salon because there is no one else like them, and I know my hair is in safe hands. Sophie and Simon are forward thinking innovators in this industry and you could not ask for more from a hairdressers. Simply the best!”

“Just had my first cut with Phil at SWH and realised what I’ve been missing going to male barbers. Phil was friendly, knowledgeable, and made me feel in safe hands from the start. Really happy with the cut, advice, and service. Big thanks also to Sophie for the friendly chat during my hairwash. Worth every penny — already looking forward to my next visit!”

Dawson Denim (Google Reviews, 2025)

Simon has been taming my hair for the past decade, and in that time, I’ve had countless re-styles and huge expectations—every single time, Simon fulfils them and then some. From the moment I walk through the door, I’m warmly welcomed by the friendly, knowledgeable staff. There’s always a safe place to store my (often numerous!) bags, and a comforting cup of tea to start the pampering session.

The experience is always relaxing: a comfortable hair wash using products I now can’t live without, topped off with a blissful head massage. Sometimes, a cuddle with Bob, the salon dog, is the cherry on top.

Simon has an incredible ability to guide my vision, talk me through the cut, and deliver results I didn’t even know I wanted. His wealth of knowledge and experience means I can trust him completely. Every visit is filled with laughter, chatter, and that wonderful post-salon feeling of confidence and renewal.

Even the ever-changing photography on the salon walls adds a touch of freshness to each appointment. The whole team works tirelessly, and it shows. But for me, it’s the Simon and Sophie effect, the warmth, skill, and care that makes me feel less like a client and more like part of the family.

Pricing FAQs

Cost is always a hot topic, whatever the industry.

We get asked questions about the value we provide to our customers, and how we price our services. Below are a selection of those but if we don’t answer yours, or you would like your voice heard then please do contact us – we read everything and take time to process and learn from it all.

There are different business models of running a hairdressers. SWH is a hybrid salon, meaning we have employed and freelance stylists. It means we pay VAT, PAYE, NIC and pension contributions. We believe the best way to deliver great service and value is to invest in the edication, fair pay and wellbeing of our team. To insist on only the highest quality of products that are ethically and sustainable responsible whilst delivering the best results.

A great hairdresser can be hard to find. And when you do find them, they’re worth holding onto. Your relationship with your stylist is built on trust, understanding, professionalism and personality. They’re often also a confidente, a counsellor and a cheerleader. A great client-stylist relationship can last a lifetime. And through those years, your stylist is investing in their skills, education and experience to continue offering you the absolute best service they can. Their price is going to increase along with that investment in their craft. But you wear your hair every day. It’s who you present to the world. And so by investing in a great hairdresser, you’re ultimately investing in yourself.

Many salon brands also product high street versions of their professional ranges. It’s not that they’re bad for you, but they’re often quick fixes and a false economy. A box colour won’t last you as long, be as multi-tonal or be bespoke in the way a great salon colour will. It’s a false economy. Similarly, with the styling products you use. A high-street brand might achieve shine or softness but it may just be leaving a later of silicon on the surface if the hair. Whereas a salon quality product will penetrative the hair and nourish from within. Sustainable, smaller brands are often more expensive to use and buy in-salon, but they’re worth the cost. They have no nasties in them, are less likely to cause a reaction, are animal-friendly and use sustainable packaging. By spending a little more, you’re making a big difference in longevity of results, hair health and reducing environmental impact. It’s a win-win!

While it’s true that many great hairdressers and salons don’t have awards, it is a good indication of quality and professionalism if they do. Awards are subjective, so one person’s GOAT stylist isn’t going to be another’s. And yes, some awarding bodies are not always totally unbiased – there are lots of paid, promotional awards out there covering all manner of industries and interests. But if a salon or stylist has recognition from a reputable brand or industry body, it’s worth paying attention to. Do your research; if you’re thinking of trying a new salon, Google any awards they hold.

Like awards, accreditations are a good clue as to how professional a salon’s approach is to what they do. Look out for salons who are members of organisations like the NHBF, Good Salon Guide or Hair and Barber Council. They follow strict protocols in terms of skin-testing, having appropriate insurance, following health and safety guidelines and having the right qualifications. Believe it or not, anyone can set-up as a hairdresser or barber without any qualifications at all! By choosing an accredited salon, you know you’re in good hands.

Profit is important. It’s what enables us to keep going and keep our team in employment. But it’s not the most important thing. Our ethics, our community and our legacy are worth far more. So at SWH we provide discounted services for local traders, residents, employees and members of neighbouring businesses. As well as blue light discounts and offers for teachers and students. For several years, we’ve offered co plimentary services for some of Brighton’s most vulnerable residents. And in response to the growing cost of living crisis over the last few years, we introduced a price-inclusive menu of essential services with our New Talent stylists. We are a salon for all our community and we put people first.
